The Robert Smalls Leadership Academy is a state-of-the-art educational facility in Beaufort, South Carolina, accommodating 900+ students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Named after black historical figure, Robert Smalls, the school serves as a historical marker within the community. The design team faced the challenge of honoring Smalls' achievements and educating about the school's history within budget constraints. A grand mural depicting Smalls' daring escape on The Planter ship serves as the focal point, with a soft color palette and thoughtful design incorporating local ecology and landmarks. The corridor features a visual timeline addressing civil and social unrest, engaging users with layered modes of understanding. Community discussions during the 2020 social awakening influenced graphic and content design, resulting in a space that attempts to reflect the pride of the Black experience in Beaufort County. The project's goal was to create a space that the community would be proud of, evident in the palpable excitement and joy exhibited by students and the community.
